Safari Spell Check: How to Enable It and Do More
How to turn on spell check in Safari, plus how WunderType proofreads grammar, clarity, and tone in any browser text field.
Typing into a text box in Safari — a comment, a form, a web app — and want it spell-checked? Safari uses macOS's built-in checker. Here's how to switch it on, and how to go beyond plain spell check while you're in the browser.
How to turn on spell check in Safari
Spell checking in Safari is controlled by the system setting. With a text field focused, go to Edit → Spelling and Grammar and enable Check Spelling While Typing. Misspelled words get the red underline; right-click for suggestions. To also catch basic grammar, turn on Check Grammar With Spelling.
If it's not working, make sure the same options aren't disabled system-wide in System Settings → Keyboard.
Spell check is fine — but it stops at typos
Safari's checker flags misspelled words, but it won't rewrite an awkward sentence, adjust tone for a professional reply, or translate. For web forms where what you write actually matters — support tickets, applications, posts — that's a real limit.
