With macOS Sequoia, Apple introduced Writing Tools as part of Apple Intelligence. Select text in a supported app, control-click, and you can proofread, rewrite, summarize, or adjust the tone of your writing. It's built right into the operating system — no installation required.

For casual use, it's genuinely helpful. Apple deserves credit for making AI writing assistance a native part of macOS. But once you start relying on it for real work, the limitations become apparent quickly.

There are no custom prompts. You can't create a "Translate to German" shortcut, a "Write a LinkedIn post from these notes" action, or a "Summarize for a technical audience" transform. You get what Apple gives you, and nothing more.

Apple Intelligence requires an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or later) and is not available in all languages or regions. If you have an older Intel Mac or live in a country where Apple Intelligence hasn't launched, Writing Tools simply don't exist for you.

WunderType's privacy model is simpler: there is no server. No account. No analytics. No telemetry. No crash reporting. When you use Ollama, your text stays on your Mac — full stop. When you use OpenAI, it goes directly from your Mac to OpenAI's API. WunderType never touches it.

If you work with confidential documents, legal text, medical records, or anything sensitive, "no server" is a stronger guarantee than "privacy-preserving cloud."

When Apple's Writing Tools Are Enough

To be fair, Apple's Writing Tools are the right choice for many users:

• You only write in Apple apps — If Mail, Notes, and Pages cover your workflow, Writing Tools are free and convenient.
• You want zero setup — No installation, no configuration, no API keys. It just works (on supported hardware and regions).
• Summarization is your main need — Apple's Summary, Key Points, List, and Table views are well-designed for reading comprehension tasks.
• You rarely need custom transforms — If Proofread and the three tone options handle your use cases, there's no reason to add another tool.
