MacGPT Alternative: A Maintained AI Writing Tool for Mac

MacGPT was one of the first apps to bring ChatGPT to the Mac in a way that actually felt native. Built by indie developer Jordi Bruin, it put ChatGPT in your menu bar, gave you a Spotlight-style prompt you could summon from anywhere, and even let you talk to the AI out loud. More than 300,000 people downloaded it, and for a while it was the obvious answer to "how do I use ChatGPT on my Mac without opening a browser tab?"

That was 2023. The category has changed dramatically since then, and MacGPT has not kept pace. If you are one of the many users searching for a MacGPT alternative, this post walks through what happened to the app, what your options are, and why a dedicated writing tool like WunderType is the better fit if most of your ChatGPT usage was fixing and improving text.

What is MacGPT?

MacGPT is a small native macOS app that gives you quick access to ChatGPT from the menu bar. It is distributed on Gumroad as a pay-what-you-want download, and it offers a handful of genuinely clever features:

  • Menubar access — the ChatGPT website (or the API) in a dropdown window, one click away.
  • Global mode — a Spotlight-style text field that pops up in the middle of your screen with a keyboard shortcut.
  • Inline mode — type a trigger phrase in any text field and ChatGPT writes the response right there.
  • Voice conversations — talk to ChatGPT back and forth without typing.
  • Bring your own API key — use the OpenAI API natively instead of the web interface.

Credit where it is due: Jordi Bruin makes well-liked Mac apps (MacWhisper being the best-known example), and MacGPT's Inline mode anticipated features that Apple and OpenAI only shipped much later. It was a genuinely good utility for its moment.

Why look for a MacGPT alternative?

The reasons users are moving on are less about the app being bad and more about the world moving around it:

  • Development appears to have stalled. The official website still lists macOS Monterey and Ventura as the supported systems — several major macOS releases ago. The last widely noted updates centered on adding GPT-4o support back in 2024, and community threads asking for a MacGPT alternative have been active on Reddit since early that year.
  • The official ChatGPT app for Mac changed everything. OpenAI shipped a free desktop app in 2024 with its own global shortcut (Option + Space). The core thing MacGPT did — summon ChatGPT from anywhere — is now built into the official client, which made most generic ChatGPT wrappers redundant overnight.
  • A chat window is the wrong tool for editing text. Whether it is MacGPT or the official app, the workflow is the same: copy your text, paste it into a chat, add instructions, wait, copy the answer, paste it back, and clean up whatever conversational filler the model added. For quick writing fixes, that round trip is most of the work.
  • An aging wrapper handling your API key deserves scrutiny. If you connected your OpenAI API key to MacGPT's native mode, you are trusting an app that no longer appears to receive regular updates with a credential that bills your credit card.

None of this makes MacGPT a scam or a bad citizen — it is simply an app whose moment has passed. The question is what to replace it with.

The best MacGPT alternative for writing: WunderType

Here is the honest framing: MacGPT is a general ChatGPT client, and if you want general chat, the official ChatGPT app now does that for free. But surveys of how people actually used menubar GPT apps show the same pattern over and over — fixing grammar, rewriting awkward sentences, making an email sound more professional. If that describes your usage, a chat window was always a workaround. What you wanted was in-place text editing.

That is exactly what WunderType does. It is a native Swift app for macOS that lives in your menu bar — familiar territory — but works on your text where it already is:

  • Select text in any app — Mail, Notes, Slack, Chrome, VS Code, anywhere macOS renders editable text.
  • Press a keyboard shortcut for the transformation you want.
  • The text is replaced in place via the macOS Accessibility API. No chat window, no copy-paste round trip, no "Certainly! Here is your improved text:" to trim off.

WunderType ships with five built-in modes — Correct Grammar, Improve Writing, Make Concise, Make Formal, and Make Casual — and you can add unlimited custom prompts, each with its own shortcut. MacGPT's Inline trigger phrases hinted at this workflow; WunderType makes it the entire product. We have written up the same in-place approach compared with other tools in our RewriteBar alternative and FixKey alternative guides.

On the AI side, WunderType gives you more choice than MacGPT ever did. New in version 1.5 is On-Device AI: models like Gemma 3 and Phi-4 Mini run inside the app on your Mac's GPU via Apple MLX — no install, no API key, no account, fully offline after a one-time model download. Prefer something else? Use Ollama locally, bring your own OpenAI API key (stored in the macOS Keychain, sent directly to api.openai.com with no middleman server), or tap hundreds of models through OpenRouter.

Is MacGPT the same as ChatGPT?

No. MacGPT is a third-party wrapper: it displays the ChatGPT website in a native window, or talks to the OpenAI API with your key. The intelligence always came from OpenAI; MacGPT contributed the convenient access. That is also why the free official ChatGPT desktop app displaced it so quickly — once OpenAI shipped its own menubar-adjacent client with a global shortcut, the wrapper's main job was done better by the source. Any replacement worth switching to needs to offer something the official app does not, which for WunderType is in-place editing and local, private AI.

What about free MacGPT alternatives?

If you just want to chat with an AI, the official ChatGPT app for Mac is free and clearly the first thing to try. On the writing side, Apple Intelligence Writing Tools are built into recent macOS versions at no cost, though they are limited to a few fixed commands and supported apps — we compared them in detail in WunderType vs. Apple Intelligence Writing Tools. And because WunderType works with free local models through Ollama or its built-in On-Device AI, the one-time purchase is the only money you ever spend — there are no API costs unless you choose a cloud provider, and no subscription like the ones we break down in our Grammarly alternative guide.

Verdict

Choose MacGPT if you are on an older macOS version, you want a free menubar shortcut to the ChatGPT website, and you are comfortable using an app that no longer appears to be actively developed. What it does, it still does — and pay-what-you-want is hard to argue with.

Choose WunderType if the reason you installed a menubar GPT app in the first place was to fix and improve your writing. You get the same lightweight, native, keyboard-driven feel MacGPT fans loved, but the text is edited in place in any app, the AI can run entirely on your Mac, and the app is actively maintained with regular updates.

MacGPT earned its 300,000 downloads by making AI feel at home on the Mac before anyone else did. WunderType picks up that thread for the writing use case — one shortcut, five modes plus your own custom prompts, and your choice of on-device, local, or cloud AI. Download WunderType from the Mac App Store and retire the copy-paste round trip for good.
